    ABSTRACT Meta-materials show unconventional properties by virtue of their construction which normally includes physicallyperiodic formations. Various responses of these materials manifest frequencydependent occurrences of significantlyenhanced and significantly-attenuated values, thus facilitating a wealth of design possibilities. The analysis of these structures presents non-trivial challenges, hence only very simple types are presently under analytical study. In this paper, a formation which includes patterned membrane fillings is explored experimentally and numerically to see if and how well such a construction may be utilized for metamaterial applications.     System Qualities Ontology, Tradespace and Affordability (SQOTA) Project – Phase 4

    This task was proposed and established as a result of a pair of 2012 workshops sponsored by the DoD Engineered Resilient Systems technology priority area and by the SERC. The workshops focused on how best to strengthen DoD’s capabilities in dealing with its systems’ non-functional requirements, often also called system qualities, properties, levels of service, and –ilities. The term –ilities was often used during the workshops, and became the title of the resulting SERC research task: “ilities Tradespace and Affordability Project (iTAP).” As the project progressed, the term “ilities” often became a source of confusion, as in “Do your results include considerations of safety, security, resilience, etc., which don’t have “ility” in their names?” Also, as our ontology, methods, processes, and tools became of interest across the DoD and across international and standards communities, we found that the term “System Qualities” was most often used.     Image Understanding For Robot Navigation

    This paper presents a method to forecast terrain trafficability from visual appearance. During training, the system identifies a set of image chips (or exemplars) that span the range of terrain appearance and measures terrain trafficability characteristics as the vehicle traverses the terrain. Each chip is assigned a vector tag representing the measured vehicle-terrain interaction properties. After training, the system uses the exemplars to segment images into regions, based on visual similarity to terrain patches observed during training, and assigns the appropriate vehicle-terrain interaction tag to them. The system will therefore allow the online forecasting of vehicle performance on upcoming terrain

    Most research on off-road mobile robot sensing focuses on obstacle negotiation, path planning, and position estimation. These issues have conventionally been the foremost factors limiting the performance and speeds of mobile robots. Very little attention has been paid to date to the issue of terrain trafficability, that is, the terrain’s ability to support vehicular traffic. Yet, trafficability is of great importance if mobile robots are to reach speeds that human-driven vehicles can reach on rugged terrain. For example, it is obvious that the maximal allowable speed for a turn is lower when driving over sand or wet grass than when driving on packed dirt or asphalt. This paper presents our work on automated real-time characterization of terrain with regard to trafficability for small mobile robots. The two proposed methods can be implemented on skid-steer mobile robots and possibly also on tracked mobile robots. The paper also presents experimental results for each of the two implemented methods
